Chiari Malformation

Chiari malformations are structural defects when brain tissue extends into the spinal canal, often due to a smaller-than-normal skull. This can disrupt normal cerebrospinal fluid flow and put pressure on the brainstem and spinal cord. Symptoms may include headaches, neck pain, dizziness, balance problems, muscle weakness, numbness, and difficulty swallowing.

Treatment Options

Some cases are discovered incidentally during imaging for other conditions. Diagnosis is confirmed with MRI. Your treatment plan will depend on the malformation’s severity. Mild cases may only need to be monitored. However, symptomatic cases often require surgery to create more space and restore normal fluid flow. Dr. Sarkiss carefully analyzes each case to provide the best treatment for your situation.
